Fishing goes back a long way in the Browne family and is continuing down the generations with the arrival of Richie and
Lizann Browne's 10m catamaran, the Myross C.S.A. in Union Hall on Friday, March 13th.
After completing his Leaving Certificate he worked for some years with Erinova Fisheries Ltd., packing and exporting fish
to Spain, following which he set up his own export company, Myross Island Fish Exports, on the Fastnet Industrial Estate,
Skibbereen, but also kept fishing in his spare time. Over the years he has had a few fishing boats, the last one being the
Myross Mist, mostly fishing for brown crab and shrimp.
In 2005 Richie and Lizann began research and discussions on the purchase of a new boat, which led them to decide that a
catamaran was the boat for the future, providing a safe and stable vessel for fishing. In 2005 the couple placed an order in
the U.K. for a Gemini Catamaran hull with Gemini Workboats, Colchester, Essex, and following its arrival, the boat was
fitted out and completed by Murphy Marine Services Ltd., in Valentia, Co. Kerry.
On March 13, the Myross C.S.A. made the journey from Portmagee to Union Hall in about four hours with family and friends
on board. Richie and Lizann have three daughters, Chloe, 12, Sarah 10 and Alanna 8, which gives a clue as to why the new
vessel is named, Myross C.S.A.
The Myross C.S.A. was blessed by parish priest, Fr. Michael Curran on a dull and cold evening on March 16th, before a
great crowd of family, neighbours, villagers and well-wishers. And although the evening was more wintry than spring-like,
there was a wealth of warm good wishes and congratulations for the Brownes and their family.
A great night's celebration followed in the Boatman's Inn, Union Hall, which is owned by Lizann's sister, Catherine and her
husband Ciarán. Richie and Lizann thanked everyone for making the night so special and all those who helped and
encouraged them along the way, especially their families.
The Myross C.S.A. has received her licence and begun fishing off the coast of Union Hall. Keeping it very much in the
Browne family, Richie's brother Vincent is crew.
The brothers are hoping to fish for Pollack in deeper waters and also to try for crab further offshore and possibly at a later
date fish for Hake and Turbot.
Myross C.S.A. is based on a Gemini GF Fastcan 10 catamaran and following delivery from Gemini Workboats, Colchester,
Essex, was completed and fitted out at the Murphy Marine Services yard in Valentia Island, Co Kerry.
The vessel has overall dimensions of 10m in length, 5.2m breadth and a depth of 1.15m., and is powered by twin
Caterpillar 3126 engines with a pair of Twin Disc gearboxes. Working a Spencer Carter NH3 net hauler and potting sheave
for crab and shrimp pots, the Myross C.S.A. is also fitted with a hydroslave 1.5 net stacker.
The Marine Times wish the Brownes every success with their new vessel, the Myross C.S.A.
